Round up of Cycling Events in January 2025: A Global Snapshot

Nik Barton |

Whilst many people felt that they hardly left their house in the poor weather over the last month, January saw a mix of thrilling cycling events across the globe, with a particular focus on the off-season preparations for the year ahead. Here’s a roundup of notable events:

  • Tour Down Under (Australia)

Kicking off the season, the Tour Down Under is a key fixture on the early calendar. Held from January 16-21, the race welcomed top professionals and served as an important warm-up for many riders ahead of the European racing season. With sunny weather and challenging stages, the event was a hotly anticipated start to the year.

  • UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships (The Netherlands)

Held from January 25-28 in Hoogerheide, this was the biggest event in the cyclo-cross calendar. Riders from all over the world competed for the coveted world champion jerseys, with thrilling battles across slippery, muddy courses. The Dutch event was especially significant for fans, as it was an opportunity to see local riders like Mathieu van der Poel in action.

  • UK National Cyclo-cross Championships (UK)

On January 7, the UK's best cyclo-cross riders gathered for their national championship in Derbyshire. This event highlighted some of the country’s finest talent, with a few standout performances from younger riders setting the stage for future competitions.

  • Dubai Tour (UAE)

This race, which took place in late January, provided an excellent challenge for riders, offering flat stages combined with some demanding climbs. Known for its fast, sprint-heavy stages, the Dubai Tour continues to be a major early season race that brings in a mix of both sprinters and general classification riders from around the world.

  • Winter Training Rides & Events (UK)

While the UK doesn’t host major events in January, the month was filled with various winter training camps, group rides, and community events. These smaller gatherings are key to maintaining fitness and building camaraderie during the colder months, and many cycling enthusiasts braved the chilly weather to enjoy some local rides.

These events have set the tone for an exciting year ahead, with riders and fans alike gearing up for the challenges and triumphs of the cycling season. Have you followed any of these events yourself ?
